Question 4:
Desire and Fate both play a large role in The Alchemist. You either believe in fate or you think it is total bogus. In my opinion most people when they are young they really believe that they will succeed as at their own personal goal, But in the end they realize they never know what will come out of life and you never know how much you will succeed at your goal. On page 18 the old man tells the boy “That a certain point in our lives we loose control of what’s happening to us, and our live are controlled by fate." I think this statement really shows how most all people live their lives. For example in the book the baker in the town has always wanted to travel, which seemed stupid and worthless to most people. As he got older he came to the conclusion that he would become a baker so he could put money away, he would then travel later in life. The old man told Santiago this, he then realized his own fate and desire, he wanted to find the treasure in Egypt and complete his Personal Legend.

This is very true. I liked how you said that the old man told him all about personal Legends. Also, how you added the boy realized what his fate and desire are. Finally, it is very true how some people think fate is true and some think it is bogus.
ReplyDeleteI dont think that the line between believing and not beliving is quite that black and white. However i agree that as you get older things become more confusing.
ReplyDeleteIt is important to note that it is a lie that fate takes over at some point in their lives. The baker expected things to fall into place after saving money, but because he abondoned his dream and no longer worked towards it, he sealed his fate (is doing) as a baker.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your comment that when you are younger you will succeed. I also agree with the quote that you put in, you always back up your answer. I think that you did a splendid job
ReplyDeleteI agree with your quote saying that when you are younger, you think everything is going to end up just the way you want it, like a little girl wanting to be a princess. She thinks that she will be a princess because she wants to be one. But in reality, she can't be one unless she really is one. When she becomes older, she will realize this and let fate take control of her life, find something more reasonable and something that society wants her to do, and she will give up on her personal goal. I also like how you said that Santiago does realize what his fate and desire, being going to find the hidden treasure in Egypt.
