Question 1
Some religious symbols I have seen in the pages 11-32 have been the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the pyriamids, and God. When the boy visits the old woman, upon her wall is an image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, he makes him swear to give her 1/10 of his treasure, that is to be found, looking at the image. "The old woman asked him to swear again while looking at the image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus." Page 14. The significance of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is to show that to swear on religion is very important, and the treasure is very important to her, this means that she must not be a gypsy. Gypsies are supposed to be evil people, but the fact that she has the Sacred Heart of Jesus on her wall shows she is not evil. In the boys dream he is lead to the pyramids in Egypt. The pyramids of Egypt have the significance of afterlife and religion saying that on his travel to Egypt for the treasure must come challenges. With challenges that have been solved you get a reward in return. Another religious symbol mentioned is God. The boy's future was planned by his father to be a priest and talk about God, but the boy wanted to travel. Although he still carries the religion with him. Each religious symbol has a certain significance that pertains to this novel.

ReplyDeleteKeenan! Yes i agree with your post very much. I liked how you explained that the Sacred Heart of Jesus was very significant because yes swearing on religion is a big deal. Just like if you swear on god. You wouldn't do this unless it was absolutely true. But i don't really understand what you mean about her not being a gypsy? In my opinion i do not think that because she has the Sacred Heart of Jesus changes that she is a gypsy. Other than that yours was very good and it made total sense about the significance about the different symbols.
ReplyDeleteMaybe because the pyramids are a symbol of the afterlife, Santiago may possibly die and have an afterlife in Egypt?
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about all of those religious symbols Keenan. I think the most obvious one is the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It shows his religion because he begins to feel more comfortable when he sees it. The pyramids are also a good religious symbol. God is definitely a religious symbol as well, but I don't remember it being mentioned at the part when his father wanted him to be a priest; just when the gypsy tells him that dreams are the language of God.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the sacred heart is very importanat and that it symbolises religion
ReplyDeletei like the part about the pyramids that they lead to the after life :)
Ya i like how you picked those items. I thought its was weird with the sacred heat, but thats only because i didnt know what gypsys belived in...beecher what do you believe in?
ReplyDeleteThe thought that she may not be a Gypsy is really interesting. Although it clearly states that the women is a Gypsy in the novel, she may not be at heart. The religion and her love and trust in religion really emphasized that point and I liked it. Everything else was good except for the couple typos.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on the point that the pyramids represent afterlife and spirtual bodies. But the fact I don't agree with is the evidence of the sacred heart showing that the gypsy wasn't evil. Being religious doesn't mean that yuo don't sin or commit evil doings. Also the dark arts or "magic" was already reguarded as a sin itself.
ReplyDeleteKeenan i agree with you on most of the points you made. I think that the sacred heart of jesus was the most obviouse one. however i dont believe that just because she was a picture of jesus on her wall makes her not a gypsy. People commit sins no matter what type of religion they are. I like how you thought the pyrimds were a symbol of afterlife. There are many religious symbols in this book that we all must ponder.
