3. Summarize the discussion between the king and the boy regarding Personal Legends. Do you believe that there is such a thing as Personal Legends?

The King first says to the boy the "most important thing is that you have succeeded in discovering your Personal Legend." As the boy first hears this, all he can ask is what is a Personal Legend? The king describes a Personal Legend is something you have always wanted to accomplish, and when you are young, every child knows what theirs is. " But as time passes a mysterious force begins to convince them that will be impossible for them to realize their Personal Legend," the king starts to explain. Even though this concept, a Personal Legend, doesn't make much sense to the boy, all he tried to understand was the force, and thought that if he told the merchants daughter this, she would be very impressed. The king reveals to the boy the worlds greatest lie, which is "that a certain point in our lives, we lose control of what's happening to us, and our lives become controlled by fate." He is trying to tell him if he wants to find his Personal Legend he needs to do something about it. Not just sit there and wait for it to come to him, that fate will not bring it to him. I do not believe in a Personal legend. When you are younger it's your mission and your desire to be what you want to be. "Desire originated in the soul of the universe. It's your mission on earth." As you get older your Personal Legend has then been faced with reality. Every kid has something they want to be when they are older, no matter how unrealistic it might be. But then the Personal Legend no longer intertwines with your life. Saying you still have your Personal Legend is like saying your life is controlled by fate.

  1. I do agree with Toni on her summary of the discussion. The boy focuses on the force rather than his personal legend.
Although, whether a personal legend is existant, I have to disagree. Each person in the world has a purpose whether it be a lifeguard or a zoologist, each person has their own personal legend to complete while on earth.

  2. I think that you are being a bit harsh but also fair about your beliefs in a Personal Legend. I personally think that nothing is impossible if you try hard enough to reach it. There are going to be obstacles but if it is your dream nothing should stop it. However you are right about reality being a harsh thing to deal with when in pursuit of dreams. But don't be too hard; nothing is impossible. I think that you are right about fate too. . .nothing is just going to fall into your lap. Overall I agree with you.

  3. Toni Ellen Hill, i agree completely about what you said. Fate will not take over and control your life. You will always have to be apart of it and make you own choices. I also agree when you are a little kiddo you have many of dreams, for example to be a rock star or an inventor. But when you grow older you come to conclusion you may not always have the chance to be all those one in a million professions. You have to work your butt off to have those goals achieved, they will never just come to your front door step and hand it to you.

  4. First of all, great summary. There are a lot of mysterious forces in this text. At first, we see forces that bind nature to humans. Now, we have forces working against our pursuit of a personal legend.

I find it interesting that you don't believe in a personal legend. Though the realities of being a rockstar, movie star, etc. come to yyou as your older, it is a testament to one's will power and drive to continue their pursuit. Keenan's definition is more applicable to life today.

  5. You're thought that fate isn't real, I completely agree with. In my mind the kind is incorrect in his statement that everyone has a goal to accomplish that was handed to them before their time. I feel that this is a huge stereotype given to us through text and film, because who wouldn't want to believe that? It is the perfect world. There is something, most likely cool, that you are going to do in your life and you're going to do it no matter what; although Personal Legends and fate are not the same item and it's unfair to generalize them together, they are very similar. Fate will happen no matter what, and a Personal Legend you must realize it and work to accomplish your dream.
